Today, if there is any problem solving you have not yet complete, please do that. If you have finished problem solving, then you may either study or work on the enrichment topics.
Homework: Study for Unit Assessment on all of Electromagnetism next class - Wednesday, May 27th.
Unit Assessment on all of Electromagnetism TODAY!
Homework: None.
Today, we'll start the new unit with a LAB: Waves on Slinkies. We'll learn new vocabulary for talking about waves. We'll see that waves transmit ENERGY, not matter (and we'll see what we mean by that). Focus on answering page 1 - #1-3, and page 2 - #1-5. After finishing the lab, we'll practice our new vocabulary by completing the Anatomy of Waves Worksheet.
If you missed class, see the two videos below:
Then, we'll learn about the relationship between period and frequency ( f = 1 / T ) and the relationship between wave speed, frequency, and wavelength ( v = f λ ). Remember that the speed of the wave depends on the properties of the medium (temperature and composition of a gas or liquid, tension in a string, material vs vacuum for EM waves). Frequency will change wavelength and vice versa while the speed of the wave through the medium stays constant.
If you were not in class or need a refresher, watch the video:
Vocabulary: medium, disturbance, wave pulse, periodic wave, transverse wave, longitudinal wave, equilibrium, crest trough, amplitude, wavelength, compression, rarefaction, period; wave speed, frequency, period, wavelength
Presentation: Waves & Sound (slides 1-7 first half of class, slides 8-15 second half of class)
Handouts: LAB: Waves on Slinkies, Anatomy of Waves Worksheet, Wave speed, wavelength, period, & frequency Worksheet.pdf (#2-3: radio waves are "light" waves)
Homework: You should have completed the first two pages of LAB: Waves on Slinkies. As a review, finish Anatomy of Waves Worksheet. Finish any of the worksheets you did not finish in class.
