Welcome to Honors Physics! Today, we'll spend our time getting used to Zoom and talking about norms for our virtual classroom. We will briefly go over what is available on my website, and will start introducing ourselves.

Homework: Accept the invitation to Google Classroom if you have not already. Make sure your email address is up to date on Genesis. I expect that you will check your school Gmail often; I will use it touch base with you. If you do not check this email often, then set up forwarding by following these instructions.

Also, create a Bitmoji of yourself if you have not already. Watch the first 2 minutes of this video to learn how to make your Bitmoji on your phone. Then add the Bitmoji extension to Google Chrome. Learn how to do that here. Then, add your Bitmoji to our class picture in ✏️Google Classroom. Be creatives with your Bitmoji selection. Here is an example of what our class picture could look like. I will be posting our Google Classroom photo on this website, so please make sure not to use your name in any part of this picture.

Change your profile picture in Zoom to be a selfie or a bitmoji - it will help me to be talking to even still pictures of faces if you turn your camera off. Change your profile picture in Zoom to be a selfie or a bitmoji - it will help me to be talking to even still pictures of faces if you turn your camera off. Also, you can change your profile name in Zoom to a nickname that you like to be called, but make sure to keep your last name visible. For example, in my Zoom settings, I can change my profile name from Barbara Fortunato to Barb Fortunato (although fun fact: I prefer to be called Barbara by my friends).

We'll continue with our introductions. If we have time, we'll play around more with Zoom.

Homework: If you have not yet done the homework above, please make sure to do so. ✏️Then, check Google Classroom for Flipgrid assignment for your personal introduction.

Today, we'll start to talk more about the course and how everything will work. We'll try out some features in Zoom such as breakout rooms for group work. Much of what we're trying to do this week is to get used to the technology and set up the environment so we feel more comfortable learning in this new way. If there's time, we'll talk about Google Classroom, how that's set up, and what is also available on my website.

We'll try to answer the following questions:

  • What did you like about virtual learning?

  • What challenges did you encounter?

  • What would help to be better next time?

  • What kinds of things have you seen done by teachers that you think are really effective for learning?

We'll also talk about collaboration:

  • What are some ways we can collaborate and form a community outside of class time?

  • What will we see when we work together virtually?

  • What will we hear when we work together virtually?

  • How can we help each other?

Finally, we'll talk about assessment and discuss:

  • What does a fair assessment look like in a virtual setting?

Homework: If you haven't done any of the homework above, make sure you get to it. ✏️Check Google Classroom for personal learning habits assignment. First three assignments all due Sunday evening.

Known bug: if you click on either Next Cycle or Previous Cycle, and there's an error, the next cycle or previous cycle might be the current cycle. Sorry, Google Sites no longer supports redirects, so I am manually changing the page addresses to do what I want them to do by naming the current cycle HP-current instead of HPcX, so we'll have to live with this bug.
