What are component vectors? How can we use them to add vectors?

Today, we'll start class by taking any questions  you have about boat problems.  Then, we'll see how we can add vectors that are not at right angles to each other.  We will learn to break vectors into x- and y- components and why that is useful to us.  We'll review Airplane Problem 2 from the last slide of Boat Problems PowerPoint to make sure you understand adding vectors by using x- and y- components.  Do Chapter 3 Problem #84 and #29.  Then start your homework in groups.

Homework:  Do Chapter 3 #84, 29, 2, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 22, 26, 38, 43 on vector addition.  Solutions.  If you'd like to review more on vector addition, you can watch this video (Ignore i-hat & j-hat notation):
